So as some of you may know, I am a vegetarian. I gave up the fleshy stuff over 2 years ago. I did it for a number of reasons but mostly for my health. I didn’t realize until fairly recently the impact that this choice could make on the environment. That is right: a plant based diet is easier on the environment than a diet of meats and processed foods.
I am currently researching the total impact that your diet has on the environment however, in the beginning stages of my research one fact has become abundantly clear: dairy & cattle farms and meat processing plants are the leading causes of greenhouse gases in our entire world today. Even more so than auto manufacturers! Greenhouse gases are those nasty things that are eating up our ozone and causing the polar ice caps to melt. I have the perfect solution to this global problem and it is quite simple: If everyone in America would adopt a plant based diet, think of what we could do to the environment.
Realistically, lets tackle this problem on a smaller level. One that may seem more manageable for the average Joe. Get your toes wet so to speak. How about if you vow to make your Monday a meatless day? One day out of seven you simply forego the Quarter Pounder at lunch. Instead, grab a salad or a baked potato. Have some fresh fruit and a healthy dose of oatmeal for breakfast. When dinner rolls around, make yourself a yummy pasta dish with roasted veggies. One day with no meat. I am not asking you to toss out eggs or suck on tofu – simply to give up eating meat for one day each week. You won’t keel over and die from lack of anything. If anything, you will notice how much better you feel. You might also notice how clear headed you are. Hell, you might even decide to take the plunge on a more regular schedule.
What do ya say? You up for the challenge?
