Help When You Need It

Although, I would love for OWW to be THE place that everyone came to for their diet, healthy lifestyle and work out needs; I know that we can not possibly toss everything out there that will help everyone. So, today, I am going to arm you with some nifty extras that I have run across that may or may not be helpful for you all.

  • Sparkpeople.com – This site is PACKED and I mean packed with all that you could hope for in an online weight loss/health site. You can register for free on the site. You get an area to keep track of your food intake and calories plus a log to keep all of your exercise. There are online groups that host chats and various activities that you can jump into to help keep you moving. There are meal plans available complete with grocery lists. PLUS – they have an app for anyone that has an IPhone. Bonus! PS – if you join there – look me up Queenie333.
  • LoseIt.com – This is strictly an IPhone site. It was featured on the Today show a while ago and is much like Spark only without the complete online resource.
  • Fitday.com – Use your free online account to enter your daily foods and exercise. FitDay analyzes all your information and shows you Daily Calorie Counts, Carbs, Fat, and Protein, Weight Loss and Goals, Detailed Nutrition for 1,000′s of foods and Long Term Diet Analysis.

I hope that one of the options above can help you each achieve your weight loss goals.

Don’t forget that today is weigh in day. Woohooo! Hop on and let us know how you are doing.

Burn Them Up

We placed an August Challenge before our readers here. A carry over of one that many of us took part in for July. We asked you to pledge to move your bod in some way each day of the month for the entire month of August. I am curious…how many of you are doing that?

It takes a mere 3,500 calories to drop a pound of body fat. That sounds like a lot at first. When you break that down however, it is only 500 calories per day extra that you need to burn in order to make that happen. Don’t think that climbing a couple of flights of stairs can make that much of a difference? Think again. Here are some other easy ways to add exercise into your life without much of an effort:

  • Vacuuming your floors. 15 minutes of running the vacuum in your home burns nearly 80 calories.
  • Park further away from your destination. Instead of driving around the lot looking for a front row spot, park in the back and enjoy the walk. If its a parking ramp, head for the roof, enjoy the view as you head toward the stairs.
  • Take the stairs whenever possible. Walking up and down six flights of stairs will burn 29 calories.
  • Stuck in an office 8 hours a day. Grab a quick sandwich for your lunch break and spend the rest of the time strolling the building. 45 minutes of a leisurely stroll burns 125 calories.
  • Wash your dishes by hand. You will burn off 75 calories per 30 minutes of wiping and scrubbing. Not to mention how it can tone up your arms too.
  • Tethered to a telephone several times per day? Go cordless so you can stroll while you gab away. 20 minutes of pacing can zap 64 calories from your bod.
  • Enjoy the work out you can get between the sheets. That burns calories too. An average romp burns 45 calories.

I want to hear how you all are moving. Even if you think it isn’t amounting to anything, chances are that you are burning a lot more than you think.

Make it up as you go…

So, another night that I was clueless and went to the pantry. Turned out well!

Here is an easy, quick and fairly healthy meal that tasted really good! I suggest serving with some brown rice, which I did but it was too shy for the photo.

Easy Asian Inspired Salmon Cakes and Roasted Squash

Asian Mayo

4 T Light Mayo

1 t low sodium soy sauce

1 t honey

Mix together and set in fridge.

Roasted Squash

Rinse and dry 2 yellow squash and 2 zucchini. Slice and place in mixing bowl. Drizzle 1 – 2 t olive oil over the veggies and stir to coat.

Place on a baking sheet and roast in a 350 pre-heated oven for 30 minutes.

Drizzle with 1 T of low sodium soy sauce.

Salmon Cakes

2 – 5 oz cans of skinned, de-boned salmon (like a can of tuna, and yes, you could substitute tuna)

3 T chopped green onions (green parts only)

1 t sesame oil

1 egg white

1/4 t powdered ginger

1.5 – 2 T bread crumbs

Drain and rinse the salmon in a fine mesh sieve or colander (to remove some of the sodium). Use the lid of the can to push and remove most of the water. Mix the salmon with the remaining ingredients and form into little patties, about 1.5 – 2″ in diameter. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and heat over medium. Cook the patties a few minutes on each side to slightly brown.

Plate and enjoy!
